Province

In June 2002, Newfoundland and Labrador's revised adoption laws laws replaced a 50-year-old statute, and let single parents and same sex couples adopt [R1.1].

The law came into effect in 2003 [R1.2].

Province

In December 1997, the provincial House of Assembly amended the Human Rights Code to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation in employment, housing, literature, and access to establishments and services [R1.1].

Previously:

Newfoundland was one of four provinces or territories that did not ban discrimination based on sexual orientation, along with Alberta, Prince Edward Island and the Northwest Territories [R1.2].

In December 2004, the Newfoundland Supreme Court cleared the way for two lesbian couples to marry legally, making Newfoundland and Labrador the seventh province to sanction same-sex marriage [R2.1].

In February 2000, attorneys-general from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Nunavut confirmed they were still reviewing their legislation with an eye to making changes giving gay pairs the same benefits as heterosexual couples [R1.1].
